Thursday 25th April saw the latest major concert of the 2012-2013 LES ‘season’ take place in the Hodson Hall. The Symphonic Wind Band, Senior Choir and Symphony Orchestra put on a wonderful display of music making in an entirely twentieth-century programme which contained challenging works more often undertaken by professional ensembles. Both Francesca Matthews (clarinet) and Jeffrey Ye (piano) excelled in their concerto movements, and the whole concert was hugely enjoyed by a capacity audience which included a host of dignitaries led by the Lord Lieutenant, High Sherriff, Chairman of the County Council and the Mayor of Charnwood. We are fortunate in having their support and encouragement, and it is good to know that they hold the Loughborough Endowed Schools in high esteem as the county’s centre for musical excellence. As one visitor remarked, ‘if I had closed my eyes I would have believed I was at a professional concert’. Bravo!

Our pupils who were entered last term for Associated Board and Trinity examinations performed better than ever with an incredible number of distinctions at all levels. However there were some particularly outstanding higher grade distinctions, headed by an incredible 147/150 for Grade 8 Saxophone – showing that the LES Music School really is a centre of excellence for musical performance. Congratulations to everyone who entered, and best of luck to those entering ABRSM, Trinity and London College of Music exams this coming term.

Congratulations to the Burton Choristers and Consort who sang the office of Choral Evensong at Lichfield yesterday, 18th April. Given that the repertoire was almost entirely new (or not recent!) and that we were three days into term, the boys did incredibly well with challenging repertore from Howells’ Coll Reg canticles to Parry’s stirring anthem, I Was Glad; both these works will be reprised when the choirs sing a joint evensong in Leicester Cathedral on Sunday 16th June in the presence of the Lord Lieutenant to celebrate the Jubilee of the Queen’s coronation in 1953.

We were warmly welcomed by the Dean and Chapter of Lichfield to whom we give our heartfelt thanks for letting us sing in their wonderful Cathedral and their organist Nigel Argust who looked after us, and accompanied our singing, so wonderfully.

The lunchtime concert witnessed some truly exceptional instrumental playing, with outstanding accompaniment from Ms Reinhard as always, and the Chamber Choir delighted with their mixture of the sacred (SS Wesley) and the profane (songs about drinking Tequila!). The audience were most appreciative, as were the musicians of the pizza provided afterwards – thank you Mrs Gradon!

Jazz Club, which was in its second edition after last year’s premiere, was a sell-out success with the Burton Hall packed, the stage packed with talented performers from the Big Band, Swing Band, Little Big Band, Chamber and Senior Girls’ Choirs, vocal soloists and the guitar-chewing Cherenkov trio, and Mr Groom resplendent in his polo neck marshalling proceedings. This event is now a real highlight of the LES Music Calendar and long may it continue. Thank you to everyone involved, and Happy Easter!

Yesterday, Thursday 28th February, witnessed the contribution of the Loughborough Endowed Schools to the Centenary celebrations marking Benjamin Britten’s enormous contribution to music. In the presence of hundreds of parents, friends and families of performers, the Mayor of Charnwood, Chairman of Leicestershire County Council and other guests including Britten expert, conductor and composer (and LES Music Visiting Fellow) Paul Spicer, and Professor Mervyn Cooke of Nottingham University who is also a Britten scholar, over two hundred LES pupils performed a variety of Britten’s works to huge acclaim. From the youngest choristers to the 6th formers who displayed professional-level skills there was commitment and enthusiasm from everyone, and so many highlights it would be invidious to name a single one. Many Pete remarked on the incredible talent displayed and were in awe of what our pupils can achieve.

Recently we have had a number of instruments that have gone missing from the cupboards in the Music School which have then turned up a few days later. This is largely because people are taking home the wrong instrument and then returning it when they realise their mistake.

Please could all pupils and parents be extra sure that they are picking up the correct instrument. All instruments that are being hired from the school should have a number tag and a name label on them. If your name label has come off then please go and see Miss Corcoran in the Music Library and she will issue you with a new one.

Feel free to put stickers, tags, ribbon or whatever you wish on your instrument cases to make them more identifiable to yourself. This will also make them easier for us to find!

Thank you!
