BC We are delighted to announce the release of ‘Christmas Cheer’, a mini album recorded by the Burton Choristers and being sold in aid of LOROS, Rainbows and the Matt Hampson Foundation.

A limited quantity of CDs are available to purchase at £5 each from the music school office but the songs are also available for download from iTunes and will shortly also be on Amazon and other download sites.

It will also be on sale at Welford Road Stadium on Saturday 3rd December when the Choristers sing songs from the CD at the Leicester Tigers’ home game against Northampton, and two days later at Leicester Cathedral when they sing for LOROS.

LES Carol Service
Thursday 15th December 2011

Last night witnessed the culmination of the festive season of Christmastide at LES, with the carol service at St Margaret’s Leicester bringing all three schools together with music led by the Senior Choir, Senior Girls Choir, Chamber Choir, Choral Society and Burton Choristers. It was a truly magical occasion with far too many musical highlights to mention individually, but the most important memory is that of an uplifting act of worship which provided for contemplation as well as exuberant carol singing. Many thanks to all involved, pupils and staff for their hard work and dedication which resulted in a quality of singing which any school would be proud to call its own. Have a very merry Christmas!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Carols at Carillon Court
Saturday 10th December 2011

A festive feast of music was at Carillon Court on Saturday morning, as our ensembles sang and played to the busy shopping public.  The performances were great fun, and aided us in raising a good sum for Rainbows, along with our mascot, Mr Fisher's dog Tess!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Scratch Messiah
Sunday 4th December 2011

A small, but determined band of singers performed excerpts from The Messiah yesterday evening, with skill and enthusiasm – in fact they sounded more like a choir of 60 rather than 21!  They were joined by a string quartet with organ and trumpet, and solos by our very own pupils.  There were some really outstanding performances, notably from Polly Gamble, Lydia Reid and Ian Cheung, and all of the other soloists.  We even managed to coax solos out of our very own Mr Morris, and Mr Osiatynski!  A massive well done to all involved.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Burton Choristers at Leicester Tigers Rugby Club
Saturday 3rd December 2011

On Saturday 3rd December the Burton Choristers gave their annual performance for the Leicester Tigers Rugby Club at Welford Road. The boys sang for the VIP guests and then, after a brief (too brief!) soundcheck in the stadium sang carols outside together with the Ratby Band. There were some surprised faces on show when TV cameras were thrust in some of the boys’ faces and a tall man started talking behind them (it was Martin Bayfield, recording his opening remarks for the ITV highlights show) – see here for the final result! (about 1m15 in).

However the main event was singing in the stadium itself, first Ding Dong Merrily (from the album Christmas Cheer) followed by World in Union before kick-off, and then at half time the boys sang from the centre circle leading the crowd singing Christmas carols. The boys did really brilliantly given the technical challenges of stadium singing: five boys had IEMs (in-ear monitors) hearing themselves and the backing tracks, and the other boys had to sing in time with them whilst ignoring the sound coming out of the speakers (which had a 1-2 second time delay). The singing was fantastic and gave the crowd a real lift.

We are immensely proud of our continued association with the club and we are especially grateful to Tigers for making a gift of the new European strip jersey to each of the boys which they proudly wore on the day: we can’t wait for December 2012!

LGS Lunchtime Concert
Friday 2nd December 2011

Our Lunchtime Concert programme returned once again to the Hodson Hall to hear a wide range of talent from the Grammar School. The Intermediate Boys' Choir performed an excellent rendition of We Are The Champions by Queen together with solo performances by Guy Thompson and Ian Cheung to name but a few. The boys played to a small but appreciative audience and were very well received; well done!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------FFD Lunchtime Concert
Friday 2nd December 2011

Fairfield’s lunchtime concert today got us all in a Christmassy mood. We heard two different versions of ‘Ding dong merrily on high’, one for the jazz fans played by Isabella Christian and the other in the traditional style played by Sarah Allen.

We also enjoyed saxophone, piano and cello pieces with a jazz feel played by Alice Bradley, James Kerr and Amelia Bahl followed by a lovely rendition of the song ‘Beauty and the Beast’ by Grace Johnston.

It was lovely to see two of our younger performers, Alex Seligmann and Aleena Moti playing in their first ever lunchtime recital after less than a term of instrumental lessons.

Well done and thank you to all of the children who took part in today’s recital.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------LGS PHSE Performance
Friday 2nd December 2011

This morning saw the best PHSE performance so far with stunning performances of both classical favourites such as Bach’s Arioso (performed by Leo Laurence with Ian Cheung), Debussy’s Arabesque (performed by Ben Cheung), Somewhere from West Side Story (Will Gray) and stunning performances by both the Antidotes and Park Bench Society. Park Bench’s singer Murray Matravers has recently received news that he has been invited by the BBC to attend a master class day at Abbey Road Studios with Zane Lowe and the Kaiser Chiefs – well done!

LHS Lunchtime Concert
Friday 25th November 2011

Today’s lunchtime featured a fantastic number of girls, with the Intermediate Girls Choir singing the fantastic Queen song ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’, and the show choir singing the beautiful ‘One Voice’ taking part.  We also had some outstanding instrumental performances from Ellen Coady on the cello, and in particular Aoife Miralles on the harp.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Ensembles Concert
Tuesday 22nd November 2011

The Ensembles Concert in the Hodson Hall on Tuesday 22 November once again showed the depth of music happening in the Music School. The music ranged from Bamboozled to a Sarabande. Music to suit everyone’s taste. The depth of playing from the Strings was truly professional. The subtleties of rhythm and texture from the percussion made us realize that percussion can be soloistic as well as a backing. The Brass, Clarinet, Flute, String and Wind Groups played with a great sense of ensemble and so much variety. Of course the Swing Band ended the show with real Razz-ma-tazz. An evening of fun and entertainment.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Children in Need
Friday 18th November 2011

Last Friday night 124 pupils from the Endowed schools gathered at Loughborough University for the Children in Need television programme. They performed brilliantly and were broadcast live on East Midlands today singing ‘Ain’t gonna let nobody turn me around’.

The evening was very busy with rehearsals, sound checks and waving at famous people, but the pupils all seemed to take their moment of stardom in their stride. We joined with a choir from Leicester for the main song at 8.30pm which was a real triumph and was included on the main BBC1 programme later in the evening.

A huge congratulations to everyone who took part!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Senior Lunchtime Concert
Friday 18th November 2011

A varied lunchtime concert with some outstanding performances. A particular mention must go to Ellen Coady for her beautiful rendition of the 1st movement of Beethoven's cello sonata.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------FFD Autumn Serenade
Wednesday 16th November 2011

On Wednesday 16th November, 170 pupils in Years 3-6 participated in Fairfield’s annual ensembles’ concert. The ‘Autumn Serenade’ featured contributions from all four Fairfield choirs, the orchestra, wind band and six smaller instrumental ensembles. A packed Eadon Hall enjoyed a wide variety of music ranging from traditional favourites  ‘Sloop John B’, and ‘When the Saints go marching in’ as well as music from Ireland, Finland, Spain, America and the Caribbean. The audience were also treated to the world premiere of Mr Geary’s latest composition, ‘The Baby Octopus’, ably played by the Senior Percussion ensemble.

The concert ended with a rousing rendition of the Avril Lavigne hit, ‘Keep holding on’ which the Yr 6 senior choirs and LES Intermediate choirs will be performing live on Friday 18th November as part of the BBC’s ‘Children in Need’ coverage.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Children in Need - LES Choir to sing live on BBC

We are delighted to announce that on Friday 18th November, 120 singers from all 3 schools will perform on the BBC Children in Need television programme at 8.30pm. They will be part a massive national choir made up of over 2,000 people and will all sing the same song in unison as the television cameras move from regiion to region.

Our choir will also sing on East Midlands Today which airs on BBC1 from 6.30pm; the choir are expected to be on the show at approximately 6.50pm.

This will be a great opportunity to be part of a massive national singing event!

Today’s lunchtime concert was a feast of excellent and varied performances in preparation for exams, ranging from Huw Rossiter’s performance of The spy who went out to the cold by Paul Harris to Lizzie Soothill’s stunning renditionof Prelude and Sarabande by Jean Françaix.  Well done to everybody!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Friday 11th November
FFD Lunchtime Concert

Our second Fairfield lunchtime concert of the school year took place on Remembrance day. Twelve enthusiastic and talented Fairfield musicians from Years 3-6 entertained us with a diverse range of music.  We enjoyed listening to the patriotic strains of ‘Land of Hope and Glory’, the serenely beautiful ‘God be in my Head’ and some lovely modern pieces by Cole Porter and Alan Menken, to name but a few. Well done to all of the young musicians who played and sang today.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Fanfare Trumpeters at Loughborough Fair
Wednesday 9th November

The Fanfare Trumpeters represented the Endowed Schools last Wednesday playing to open the Loughborough Fair. They played at the entrance to the Town Hall to announce the beginning  of the procession of the Mayor and other dignitaries. This was followed by the Fanfare being played during the opening ceremony. Lizzie Soothill, Tim Gradon, Tom Johnston and Ed Liu played extremely well.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Children in Need
Wednesday 9th November

This morning the BBC came to film a rehearsal in preparation for Children in Need 2012 which takes place on Friday 18th November. 120 LES singers from the LGS and LHS intermediate choirs, LGS junior choir and the Year 6 pupils from the FFD senior boys and girls choirs are providing the majority of voices for the East Midlands regional superchoir singing live on national television during the evening’s broadcast, as well as closing the early evening East Midlands Today programme just before 7pm.

Although the LGS boys couldn’t join this morning’s rehearsal because of house music rehearsals the rest of the children were overjoyed to meet a most special guest… Pudsey Bear himself came, prodded and poked the Director of Music and took over conducting! Anyone would think Pudsey was a musician…

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Informal Concert
Tuesday 8th November

Last night, we staged an informal concert in aid of Rainbows. The concert was very well attended and raised some much needed funds for the great work that Rainbows do. Well done to all of our pupils who took part.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Evensong - Durham Cathedral
Monday 7th November

On Monday 7th November the Burton Consort and Choristers sang evensong in the beautiful surroundings of Durham Cathedral. Supported by a large congregation including parents, past pupils now at Durham University, Canon Stephen Cherry (former Rector of Loughborough and LES governor), the Dean and several of the Chapter of the Cathedral, the boys gave spirited renditions of Dyson’s Canticles in D, Wesley’s stirring anthem Blessed be the God and Father, and acquitted themselves extremely well in the complex art of singing psalms and responses.

Next term the boys will be singing evensong at Christ Church Cathedral Oxford on Monday 26th March.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Alan Thomas Recital
Thursday 20th October

This was an inspirational evening of music for classical guitar.  Alan Thomas played with passion and conviction, both in the pieces he played by Manuel de Falla and Heitor Villa-Lobos, but also in his own compositions.  These were filled with new ideas and stunning imagery, particularly his suite Out of Africa.  He also played us some experimental electro-acoustic music, where the computer responded to what he was playing on his guitar , which created music that was both clever and atmospheric.  All in all, an evening to remember!

Julian Lloyd Webber Master Class
Tuesday 18th October

We were thrilled to be visited by Julian Lloyd Webber and his wife Jiaxin Cheng for a brief masterclass with some of our own advanced cellists and also two pupils from other schools, which ended with Julian playing Bach’s Arioso on his Stradivarius cello. A memorable encounter for all involved!

Later our cellists performed at the pre-concert reception for the opening concert of the Orchestra of the Swan’s residency at Loughborough Town Hall and stayed to watch the concert which was also being broadcast live on BBC Radio 3. The Orchestra of the Swan is the Loughborough Endowed Schools’ associate orchestra and we are looking forward to many future collaborations with this exciting ensemble. Click here to be taken to the recording of the concert from the BBC iPlayer.

This year’s Autumn Concert in the Hodson Hall began with a rousing rendition of the school hymn, and was followed by outstanding performances by the Symphony Orchestra, Senior Girl’s Choir, Big Band, Symphonic Wind Band, Chamber Choir and Senior Choir.  A special mention should go to Natalie Moores and Sarah French, who so wonderfully portrayed Elphaba and Glinda, the warring witches from Wicked! with so much passion and conviction!
