LES Presents: Strings and Orchestras

Around 230 orchestral musicians of every age and stage performed in this year’s LES Presents: Strings and Orchestras in the Hodson Hall on 21 April, in what was described by one member of the audience as a “delightfully bonkers” concert. Fitting quite so many players, their sundry instruments and a willing and enthusiastic audience of supporters into the hall did prove possible, but it was a tight squeeze indeed!

Following a rousing sing through of the National Anthem in honour of Her Majesty’s 90th birthday, the concert itself opened with an exciting performance of the Praeludium from Greig’s  Holberg Suite by the LES String Ensemble, our top tier string group. With exquisite contrast, this was followed by music from our youngest string players, the Year 2 Colourstrings classes: 50 violinists and cellists playing en masse with excellent rhythm, coordination and concentration. Following this delightful opening, we heard cello and violin groups of all ages (including the parents’ string class) showing what a fantastic sound strings can make when they have a unanimity of purpose and sense of occasion. The senior ensembles amazed and captivated the younger children with invigorating renditions of Rossini’s Thieving Magpie Overture and Beethoven’s Egmont. It is reassuring to know that in due course, our current junior performers will be providing similar inspiration for the next generations of LES beginners.
