Loughborough Piano Competition 2018

The inaugural Loughborough Piano Competition took place on Saturday 12 May in the Music School’s Recital Hall. Thirty seven competitors from across the Midlands took part in three age group classes to compete for cash prizes as well as the Pianist of the Year trophy.

Professor Nigel Clayton from the Royal College of Music was the adjudicator and did a spectacular job at listening to so many stunning performances and giving inspiring feedback. As he said on the day, “sometimes my job is so wonderful, listening to music performed by talented pianists but it gets very tough when I have to make the final decision.”

Congratulations go to Rebecca Bazlov from Birmingham who won the class for pianists aged 11 and under, performing four movements of Bach’s Partita No. 2, and also to the High School’s RanRan (who won the 15 and under class with Copland’s The Cat and the Mouse) and the Grammar School’s Alexander (under 19s winner), who played Chopin’s third Ballade. Rebecca was awarded the Pianist of the Year and will be joining LES pianists on their annual trip to Steinway Hall for a masterclass and concert on the 29th June.
