For Pupils
Exams
Many teachers enter their pupils for graded music examinations with one of the various examining boards. It should be stressed at this point that exams are not the be all and end all of the learning process but can help as a means of measuring progress. Your child’s teacher is the best judge as to whether an exam should be taken and which grade should be attempted. It is a better experience for pupils to achieve good marks at one grade than to scrape a pass at a higher one.
There is no rush to get through the grades. It is helpful if you reinforce this with your child.
The pupil will be entered for public music examinations only with the consent of the teacher and parent. Pupils are strongly recommended to attend aural lessons during the two terms prior to an examination. These are currently available in the Music School for no extra charge.
Exam Accompaniment:
All candidates (with the exception of harpists, pianists and some percussionists) will require an accompanist in the examination, for which there is a fee. The fee covers a rehearsal and the exam time itself. Some Individual Music Teachers like to accompany their own pupils or we can arrange the services of an official Music School accompanist (either the Head of Keyboard or another member of the Music School staff); the fee payable is the same regardless. As the music for higher grades demands considerably more practice and rehearsal time a sliding scale applies.
Where an accompanist is required, parents will be asked on the examination form to tick the box stating whether their child’s teacher will accompany them or if they would like the Music School to arrange an accompanist.
